Dogs are designed to be man’s ideal animal companion. They can be bodyguards, playmates, or a family member. Indeed, they are human’s best friend and a constant stress-reliever. Most people prefer dog breeds to their liking and based their choices on the trainability, food demand, temperament, and most of all, the looks.
How you can find a dog good-looking depends on the image of a dog you got used to. Most of us tend to find the local dog breed as the basis of identifying the dog’s appearance qualities. However, beauty is subjective. Even if most people find a certain mutt ugly, there are people who still love them as what dogs are supposed to be.
To see the other side of beauty, this article will talk about the ugly dog breeds. The dogs below are considered by many as some of the ugliest dog breeds in the world, in no particular order. A great number of them can seem as charming despite their ugliness because they can be so cute.
Dogs Considered as “Ugliest” And Still Most Loved
Chinese Crested Dog
For recent years, one breed is dominating the World’s Ugliest Dog contest: the Chinese Crested dog. This is basically a hairless dog breed that comes with two varieties: one with fur (Powderpuff) and one without (Hairless).
This dog breed is considered ugly mainly because of its skin as if it has a skin disease. The mouth also is considered primitive wherein the teeth are almost all pointy and can be prone to poor dentition.
Although the dog breed is constantly in the Worlds Ugliest Dog Breeds contests, it only showed that there are people who had owned them and invested in them. These dogs are very agile and affectionate. People love to own them because of their very unusual appearance that somehow contradicts their temperament to humans.
The Neapolitan Mastiff is a massive breed and often used as guards. The distinct quality that makes this breed unattractive is its face complexion featuring so many wrinkles on the face that make the dog look so old and the cheeks seem to droop. Moreover, its depressed face appears to be the opposite of an alert, observant dog.
Despite looking elderly due to its face complexion, they are preferable because they are very loyal and non-aggressive even though their size can put almost anyone to scare. Their habitual drooling when they feel excited adds to the validity of their sweetness.
Another name for the dog breed is Xoloitzcuintli. It appears like an overgrown, furless Chihuahua. The exposure of their skin, like the Chinese Crested, is one of the qualities that make them ugly. Their bat-like ears also can be a scary trait that makes them look wild.
The Mexican Hairless may be more of a runner-up to the Chinese Crested. However, their energy is what stands out. As puppies, they can be playful and noisy. When they become adults, they are protective and loyal. They are also ideal for being suspicious of strangers.
The Chinese Shar-Pei has similar ugly qualities to the Neapolitan Mastiff except that it’s a bit shorter. As puppies, they can have more wrinkles than adults. Also, the fatter they get, the more prominent their wrinkles can be. The blue-black tongue also seems unusual for a typical dog breed.
The Shar-Pei is often suspicious of strangers, and that’s why proper training and socialization is needed at early stages. They may be needing extra work, but once they are properly trained, they will become protective guard dogs along with great affection to their human owners.
Hungarian Puli and Komondor
The Puli is a dog breed of medium size. The Komondor is similar in appearance but much larger. Both breeds have the same qualities. Their long, tightly curled coat of hair is similar to a human hair in dreadlocks. The hair is quick to grow and can go even longer, making both dog breeds susceptible to dirt. Anyone can mistake them as large rags or a mop heads, especially of the Puli because of its size.
Both breeds originate as sheepdogs, meaning they were bred to look out of the livestock. As an owner, you will definitely have to consider your dog’s grooming into the monthly budget. However, the energy and the protective nature the dog brings will surely make you feel safe, especially if you have livestock.
English Bull Terrier
The appearance may be the inspiration for some funny animated dogs on notable cartoons. The English Bull Terrier has that egg-shaped face. The nose-line is much less prominent and the eyes can’t widen enough even when they tend to beg something.
As some considered the appearance of the English Bull Terrier as alien-looking, the dog has so many qualities a typical owner can love. The dog is gentle and playful. Aside from being loyal and enjoying the company of people, it also loves being in action. With such great agility, English Bull Terriers are ideal on adventures and even for protection too.
The pug is a breed of dog of short size. It has a massive head with large eyes and unattractive wrinkles on the head. This type of breed is one of those ugly-cute types. The short snout makes them look angrier and grumpier than the usual dogs.
The pug’s cuteness comes a lot from its innate qualities. They are so active and spirited with their short size. Their eyes look so expressive and in constant need of attention. They are also loyal and even fun-loving, suitable as family dogs.
The dog breed looks very similar to the pug although larger and muscular in size. The ears are so upward and their mouth appears to be salivating. The French bulldog moves in a funny way because of its muscular build on a smaller frame.
Anyone will surely have a good time just by watching French bulldogs walk. They look so enjoyable and are very fun-loving. Like any other guard dogs, French bulldogs are alert and scary looking. However, they can be so affectionate to their owners that they can even develop separation anxiety.
The Chihuahua is considered as the smallest dog breed. There are two varieties based on their facial hair: short-haired and long-haired. Both varieties have large upright ears. The ugliness of a Chihuahua can be seen if it bares its fangs, especially when angry. The so-called smile can be an object of laughter and scare for it is unusual for a dog of that size to look like that.
The Chihuahua is not as ugly as it seems. They are small so it’s good to have them even in city apartments. However, the dog breed is easily provoked which can cause its face to get ugly very quickly. Though they are very temperamental, they can be loyal and overprotective. The dog, despite its small size, shows no fear of any other dog breeds or any creature it normally faces.
Whatever the dog breed may be, the appearance will never matter if you love dogs. They are ideal pets, and like babies, they are very expensive investments too. Regardless of how they look, we should still love them all the same.
